My Favourite Movies Based on Retro TV Shows
Look familiar? They're Sleestacks from Land of the Lost. Holy shit, I just thought of a great post; the scariest clips of Sid & Marty Kroft children's programming. Yeah, I don't think my computer has enough hard drive space to hold all the Kroft Brothers YouTube clips that scare the shit out of me (Lidsville, anyone?). But the above image is from the highly-anticipated (uh, by me) Brad Silberling Land of the Lost remake, which seemed 100% badass, untill I realized that Will Ferrell has been cast as Rick Marshall. Thanks, Hollywood.
Where was I going with this? Ah yes. Normally TV-to-Movie translations are shitty at best (I really don't have to name names. Ah what the hell...Lost in Space). But here are my favourites, ones that can do no wrong in my eyes.
The Brady Bunch Movie, 1995
Okay, where to start? A movie that set out to capture the most adorable parts of the 70's is now an adorable little time capsule of the 90's. RuPaul, Grunge, Fresh Prince's Uncle Phil. I really would like to hear someone say they hate this movie, because in its 13 year lifespan, I have not yet met one person who doesn't like it. A Very Brady Sequel, on the other hand...
The Beverly Hillbillies, 1993
Any movie with Dolly Parton is OK in my books, but The Beverly Hillbillies is more than just another vehicle for Backwoods Barbie. Its also a great example of Diedrich Bader dressing up as a woman, Oscar-winner Cloris Leachman dressing up as a crazy octogenarian, and 'The Nutcracker' (a fantastic wrestling move known in my home as The Gas Pedal). But the best part of the film is Jim Varney's unquestionably sweet and charming Jed Clampett.
The Addams Family, 1991
No question, remake or original, this is a fucking sweet movie.
Casper, 1995
I think it is because I had a bit of a crush on Devon Sawa. Sike! I had a crush on Bill Pullman and the voice of Fatso, Brad Garret. But really, have you ever watched the Casper cartoon? Holy shit, talk about falling asleep with you eyes open. They could have filmed 90 minutes of a cat licking itself and it still would have been better.
And really, who am I kidding...here is the Lidsville theme! Please send all your therapy bills to me, The Mayor.

What about Bewitched?!
Do you even dare go there?
I used to watch the Brady Bunch Movie whenever it was on HBO, which was like 7 times a day for 3 years. None of my friends believed me that it was funny as fuck. Well I am putting it on my Netflix queue and then I will show it to that gaggle of bastards and I will laugh! And then they will laugh! And then we shall all laugh, and maybe then I can be happy and sleep at night without resorting to liquor and pills and rough sex with immigrants. I will still do those things, but not out of necessity!
I also liked the Beverly Hillbillies and Addams Family Movies.
